Laurie 85692. Start to Rapid City-Haig, Nebraska along the way.
Barb We saw a Volker truck!
Mom We traveled to “Haig Nebraska near Scotts
Bluff. After driving around mainly dusty little roads, we found the Haig’s
house. Henry Haig, wife and four children in early 1900s. We ended up talking
to a Mrs. Acton who now owns Haig and was offered $600,000 for the land. She
treated us to a cake. She’s old, and very nice. Then we drove to Scotts Bluff
National Monument.
Tom We drove to a Dairy Queen and had
an ice cream coooone.
Andy
Highway 71. a pair of golden eagles? rose up from the ditch and
flew alongside the car about 10 feet away. The larger wingspan 5 feet, the
length 1 ½-2 feet.
Sue As we got 30 miles from Hot Springs, our new tire
had a blowout. It was very exciting; Barb started screaming at Dad because she
thought the car was on fire. Then she passed out. She woke up hyperventilating.
After a few minutes she was ok. Andy had to change the tire because dad broke a
few ribs loading the car this morning. (It’s been one of those days!) We found
out we only had three studs on the back tire. We spent the next 28 miles saying
the rosary. After five rosaries and one “God be with you needless to say, we
were ok. (got to a station that just happened to be a Ford station, the only
one open in town at 9:00pm and there was a man there.) We got to the Holiday
Inn in Rapid City
about 12midnight.

Haig. Haig or Haigville is a station
on the Union Pacific railroad and was named for Harry Haig, an old friend of
John Clay who was a local cow-boy, in the early days, with the Two Bar outfit.
Harry Haig is a relative of some of the Haigs who were generals in the English
army during the recent war. The post office is called Haigville to distinguish
it from Hoag, Gage
County, and to prevent
confusion of mail.
