So down in new orleans things aint quite right
but one things for sure. they play the music tight
the city been crazy since 1718
with magic and voodoo and mardi gras queens
a strange combination of african beats
met with brass bands on the Nawlins Streets
Jelly Roll and Buddy didn't play it straight.
The needed improvisation to make Jazz great.
The music spread. Not every body was right in the head.
You got a 2nd line if you showed up dead.
Then there was Louis who they called Satchmo
And as Fate (his first band leader's name) would have it, he let that music flow
He influenced the rest, and grew to fame,
When Rhythm and Blues started to make its claim
Now Fess may be the heart, of this music loving town
But things started to change, after James Brown.
Found the ONE.
Now New Orleans was bumping.. all sorts of music thumpin
Here's a litlte story.. that really was somethin.
Out at the Poodle's Patio, miss Suzanne Robins was the show
Mac Rebennack would come on after, and let the party roll
Dr. John was a personna he made up for Ronnie Barron
But Ronnie didn't want it, so Mac just took it on.
Bands couldn't be mixed of folks black and white,
but James Booker and the Doctor tried to make things right
They's switched musicians in and out their bands
And started funkin it up, however they can.
Now the DA Garrison had an eye for Suzanne
But when she turned him down, he threw her in the can.
And Poodle's became the first place of many at the time
To get shut down by the vice squad for getting out of line.
A little bit later, down at Ivanhoe's
The funky meters formed and every night there was a show
With George and Leo, Zigaboo and Art.
Started making New Orleans funk with instrumental parts.
They made it big.. Played for the Stones
And inspired my love for funk.. down to my bones
Later came Rebirth, Shorty and Galactic.
Chocolate Milk really was fantastic.
Now K-Doe's another story. Got a chance to see him at the fest
Was a wild man on the stage. Was as good as the best.
Took my mom to see his place, the old mother in law lounge
Now owned by Kermit, since the K-doe's aint around.
So now you know a little about where we come from
Don't matter what you do as long as you know the one.
Well now funky New Orleans is all around the World
